- The Story of Marimekko -
Marimekko was co-founded in Finland in 1951 by its founder Armi Ratia and husband Viljo, who runs a textile factory. At that time, it was just after World War II. Coupled with the cold and dark winters in the Nordic region, Armi hoped to bring more enthusiasm and joy into the lives of Finns through colorful daily necessities. The "Mari" in the brand name Marimekko is converted from Armi's name, and "mekko" means skirt.
Each print of Marimekko has its story and representative meaning, and also has a unique name. For example, the familiar poppy flower pattern Unikko was designed by Maija Isola when Armi banned the use of flowers to design patterns. The reason Armi opposed the use of "flowers" for pattern design was because she thought that "flower" patterns cannot be as beautiful as the "flowers" in the real world. As a result, Maija insisted on proposing a series of flower patterns to Armi. Among them, the most eye-catching poppy pattern got a great response, and Unikko from 1964 has been popular all over the world since then and has been passed down to this day.
